I have to take sides with Kevin on most points.

You're ignoring an important aspect of interconnectedness, which is the diversity of connections. In a network where only one sort of relation is present your statements on the "one superorganism" and opting out may be valid.

But this is far from reality. What we see is, overlapping or rather overlaying networks where connections between agents are determined or influenced by natural laws, technology, individual will and awareness. Different mixes create different (global) networks. And yes, the unity of all these networks can be thought of as one super-network, as they share components, but that's far from the superorganism you're referring to.

Opting out is not possible from a network where you can't severe the connection. The Lovelockian Gaia or the GCP are such networks. But where connections are based (at least partially) on human technology and individuals may be aware of their contribution to the superorganism, opting out is indeed a matter of choice. Whether this choice is beneficial to the individual is a different question, as the example of the market points it out.

There's a lot of depth in this subject that needs to be explored.
